Meet QUILLBert and QUILLBee

Two characters are moving into QUILLVille, and you'll start running into them around this site. Here's Jeff, who started QUILL, to introduce them.

I think it's time you met a couple of new friends. Or, depending on how long you've been hanging around QUILLVille, maybe one of them isn't entirely new.

Meet QUILLBert and QUILLBee.

QUILLBert is our wonderfully curious QUILLVille porcupine. He's the explorer. He likes poking around, finding things, pressing buttons just to see what they do, and wandering into corners of QUILLVille nobody has swept yet. Every so often he turns up something we probably should have documented better. He stands for the fun, the curiosity, the experimenting and the community behind everything we're building. Technology can be powerful without being boring, and QUILLBert seems determined to prove it, one button at a time.

QUILLBee has a different job. QUILLBee is your guide. When you're learning something new, trying to make sense of a feature, hunting for a shortcut, working through a user guide, or wondering what changed in a new version, QUILLBee is the one who helps it all click. QUILLBee explains things plainly, points out the details worth knowing, saves you a few detours, and now and then taps you on the shoulder to say, "Hey, you might want to know this."

Here's the short version. QUILLBert discovers things. QUILLBee explains them.

Sometimes you'll see one. Sometimes the other. Once in a while they'll show up together, and I fully expect that every now and then QUILLBert will wander into something that leaves QUILLBee with a little explaining to do. That's probably going to be part of the fun.

One thing matters more than all the rest: neither of them should ever get in your way. Their job is to make QUILL friendlier, easier to understand, easier to explore, and, I hope, a little more delightful. If one of them ever slows you down, write to support@community-access.org and tell me. They'll hear about it.

You'll see them around this website first, then in the QUILL Cast user guide and in release notes. Later on, don't be surprised when they start wandering into QUILL, QUILL Lite, Quill Radio, QUILL Cast and the other corners of QUILLVille.

Welcome, QUILLBert and QUILLBee. I have a feeling we're going to have some fun with these two.

See you around QUILLVille,
Jeff

QUILLBert and QUILLBee, a few minutes later

QUILLBert: I found something.

QUILLBee: You pressed every button again, didn't you?

QUILLBert: Maybe.

QUILLBee: Fine. Let me show everyone what it does.

How you'll know who's talking

A note from QUILLBee

Every time one of them turns up, the name comes first, in plain words: "QUILLBee's tip", say, or "QUILLBert found something". Your screen reader tells you who it is before they say anything else. If you're reading by sight, QUILLBert's boxes have a dashed edge and QUILLBee's have a solid one. QUILLBert says dashed is more adventurous.

You won't find them on every page, and that's on purpose. They show up where there's something worth finding or something worth explaining, and then they get out of the way. A good place to start is the home page, or the FAQ if you have a question already.
