Quill Converter 1.0: every sound and video format, from the keyboard
September 28, 2026 – from Community Access
Right-click a file, choose Convert with Quill Converter, press Ctrl+Enter. Hear how far it has got, hear when it is done, and hear why if anything went wrong.
Somewhere between “I recorded this in the wrong format” and “my player will not open this,” almost everybody hits the wall of media conversion. The usual answer is a website that wants your recording uploaded to a stranger, or a program whose buttons a screen reader cannot name.
Quill Converter is the other answer. It is a free converter for Windows, part of the QuillVille family, built for screen readers from the first line. It runs entirely on your own computer, and nothing you convert ever leaves it.
What it does
- 34 formats out, 82 in. 25 sound formats and 9 video formats, from MP3, M4A and M4B audiobooks to FLAC, Opus, WAV, MP4, MKV and WebM. Every format is spoken with what it is for – “M4B audiobook – remembers your place in book players” – so you choose by purpose, not by acronym.
- Fast video. H.264 and H.265 are encoded on your graphics chip when it can, several times faster than the processor alone.
- Video, with every track that matters. A film’s described-audio track and its second language come through, and MKV keeps the subtitles. Video presets are named for the result: Same quality, Phones and the web, Smaller file, Smallest file, and Change the container only.
- Effects named for the problem. Clean up speech, Podcast ready, Audiobook ACX ready, Louder dialogue for films and TV, Night listening and more. You should not need to know what a de-esser is to fix sibilance.
- Hear it first. Preview (Ctrl+P) plays fifteen seconds exactly as the result will sound; Hear Original (Ctrl+Shift+P) plays the same fifteen seconds untouched.
- Chapters, kept. A file’s own chapter marks survive every conversion, and Quill Converter can make them for you – at the pauses, every few minutes, or from a list you wrote. The Chapter Workbench (Ctrl+H) edits them by ear.
- Join and split. Join into One File (Ctrl+J) makes one audiobook from a folder of tracks, each track a chapter. Split by Chapters (Ctrl+Shift+S) goes the other way.
- A video, a whole playlist, or a channel. Paste a YouTube link and choose how much to take; every video’s audio arrives in order, tagged as one album, and next time only the new ones download.
- Edit Tags (Ctrl+T): title, artist, album and cover art, without leaving the queue.
- Right-click in File Explorer. Select fifty files, choose Convert with Quill Converter once, and all fifty arrive in one window, in one queue.
It tells you what is happening
A conversion is not silence until it ends. Progress is counted inside each file, so a two-hour audiobook moves from 0 to 100 percent just as a queue of fifty songs does. It is spoken at 25, 50 and 75 percent, and the status bar, the progress bar and the tray icon’s tooltip say how far it has got and about how long is left: “Converting Book.m4b: 42 percent, about 3 minutes left”.
Stop means stop. Ctrl+Enter or the Stop button ends the conversion at once – the file in progress too – and removes its unfinished output, so nothing half-written is left behind.
When something fails, the reason is in words – “This file is copy-protected and cannot be converted”, “The output drive is full” – and Conversion Report (Ctrl+R) lists every file with what happened to it, ready to paste into an email.
Everything is included
Nothing downloads the first time you use a feature. FFmpeg, the mpv playback engine, the URL downloader and the tagging library are all inside both downloads. Conversion never touches the network; only Check for Updates and Convert from URL do, and only when you ask.
Two downloads, choose one:
- The installer – adds a Start Menu entry, the File Explorer right-click, and an uninstaller. It installs the shared QuillVille runtime if the computer does not already have it.
- The portable ZIP – unpack anywhere, a USB stick included. It keeps its settings in its own folder and writes nothing to the computer it runs on.
Press F1 anywhere in Quill Converter to hear what the window is for and what the focused control does. Ctrl+F1 opens the full user guide.
It is free, and it is yours
Quill Converter is free and open source. No account, no subscription, no advertising, nothing phoning home.
If it does something wrong, or does not do something you need, write to support@community-access.org. A person reads every message.

Please pass it on
If you know somebody who has been uploading their recordings to a website just to change the format – or who gave up on a converter whose buttons had no names – send them this. That is the entire point.
